Led by President Trump, the Republican Party has disgracefully embraced white Christian nationalists and is working to turn back the clock on progress America has made in the struggle against racism and other bigotry.
President Lyndon Johnson’s lies about the Vietnam War created what came to be called a “credibility gap” when millions of people stopped believing him. Today, a credibility gap plagues President Trump because of his whoppers about the war with Iran and much more.
Republicans have denounced Democrats as socialists and communists since the 1930s. President Trump has frequently joined the chorus, such as when he said in 2019: “A vote for any Democrat in 2020 is a vote for the rise of radical socialism and the destruction of the American Dream.” Yet despite his hyperbolic rhetoric, Trump has abandoned key conservative principles that Republicans have long espoused and instead adopted some socialist positions.
I never thought I’d see the U.S. government side with the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis and other violent racist groups against a prominent civil rights organization. But the Justice Department has disgracefully done this, charging the Southern Poverty Law Center with 11 counts of wire fraud, bank fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Instead of focusing on the most important and challenging duties of his job, President Trump is irresponsibly and foolishly wasting his time and millions of our tax dollars on trivial pursuits.
President Trump, who treats the Justice Department as if it were his personal law firm, fired Attorney General Pam Bondi because she failed to weaponize the department sufficiently. He wanted her to vindictively prosecute his enemies as effectively as he demanded, and she failed. She also failed to make the Jeffrey Epstein scandal go away.
President Trump is a con man who governs incompetently based on emotion, prejudice, self-interest, impulse, ignorance and lies. He has intentionally broken many of his campaign promises and gravely damaged America’s economic and national security.
President Trump’s irrational love affair with fossil fuels is doing more than polluting our environment and accelerating climate change. It is benefiting Iran and Russia, harming global security, and raising energy prices as the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran rages.
President Trump’s firing of incompetent Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is welcome news. But unless he changes his harmful polices on immigration and other areas the Department of Homeland Security oversees, the department will continue to be plagued by problems and Americans will suffer.
President Trump’s State of the Union address was a long temper tantrum filled with lies, insults and projection, attributing his own failings to others.
Trump falsely accused those he considers his enemies of mistakes, misconduct and malignant behavior. He complained incessantly about former President Joe Biden, congressional Democrats, unauthorized immigrants, the media and others, in the longest State of the Union on record, at one hour and 47 minutes. He showed once again that he is in love with the sound of his own voice and would rather attack Democrats than work with them to benefit the American people.
